The Other League: Transfer Update

Athletic Bilbao: a year ago I would have said Athletic selling Javi Martinez would be impossible, but considering how out of place he looked in Marcelo Bielsa´s system which relies on width and not so much explosiveness from the middle, it is looking rather interesting to say the least. FC Barcelona are one suitor. They would essentially trade one of their young cantera players for the rights to Real Betis´s Basque midfielder Beñat and then try to entice Athletic for Javi. Bayern Munich would just buy him outright. I´m still not sure anything will happen.

Atletico de Madrid: with creative spark Diego leaving for Germany after his loan-spell ends, the club had considered the possibility of signing Mexican Giovanni Dos Santos. That looks dead. His club Spurs would consider a move only if he were bought outright. Atléti have no money. Impasse continues for Gio.

Betis: supposed future star Jefferson Montero has ended his three year stint in Spain. He failed to find a place on Villarreal´s squad, other than with Villarreal-B, and spent two uneventful years on-loan at Levante and Real Betis. Now he´s off to the Mexican League with Morelia.

Celta Vigo: The Viguenses want fromer Villarreal youth-team prospect Jonathan Pereira from current club Real Betis and are willing to include a series of players like Roberto Lago or Andres Tunez to the mix.

Deportivo La Coruña: Argentine central defender Diego Colotto has been sold to RCD Espanyol.

Espanyol: much like Coro and Kameni before him, midfielder Javi Marquez has been told by the club that his services are no longer necessary, that he should negotiate his exit on his own, otherwise he will be frozen out when the club starts training again at Perelada in July. Apparently there is some interest from Valencia on the range of 3 million euros.

Getafe: former Getafe coach Michael Laudrup has been hired at Swansea. People remember him as a player, but they have been underwhelmed by his recent stints at Spartak Moscow and a contentious season at Real Mallorca. When left alone, and he can implement his scheme, Laudrup is an excellent hire to continue Brendan Rogers´s work. In his year at Getafe he reached the final of the Copa del Rey, losing to Valencia, and was a UEFA Cup quarter-finalist.

Granada: considering the close relationship between Granada and parent club Udinese, it is not surprising that forward Antonio Floro-Flores is about to transfer over, I can´t really say sign because the Pozzo family owns Granada to a certain extent, but that would be a good thing. Second years in Primera are very difficult years for small clubs like Granada.

Levante: they have signed forward Ángel Luis from Elche CF. Real Mallorca were interested but the opportunity to play Europa League football enticed the Tenerife native.

Malaga: are Malaga really preparing a 20 million euro offer to Sevilla for Álvaro Negredo? I think they´d get more bang out of Álvaro Vasquez of Espanyol, for maybe half of that.

Mallorca: Caparros likes his wingers, so it is not surprising that the club are following Sporting Braga´s Nigerian winger Elderson Uwa.

Osasuna: the club have signed left-winger Sisinio Gonzalez ¨Sisi¨ for three years.

Rayo Vallecano: Paco Jemez has been hired to take over for José Luis Sandoval. If the problem was their bad form in the second half under Sandoval, why hire a coach who has never coached in Primera before? Rayo star Michu is being considered by 5 or 6 English Premier League clubs: Manchester United is one of them.

Real Sociedad: Real Sociedad want to sign Arsenal forward Carlos Vela. The player likes Anoeta, but Arsenal have valued him at around 6 million pounds or 7.5 million euros. The price-tag is a bit above what the Txuri-urdin will pay.

Sevilla: the club are considering a move for English midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker from relegated Bolton Wanderers.

Valencia: Barcelona have had it with the strong-arm negotiating tactics of Valencia´s President Manuel Llorente. The club value fullback Jordi Alba at 15 million euros and the blaugrana won´t pay more than 12. The deal will get done, but Valencia are waiting to see if there´s a Euro 2012 jump in Jordi´s price.

Valladolid: Most recently promoted clubs will sign a few players and keep their core intact. Not Valladolid. The club have decided to release Matabuena, Juanito, Varela, Jofre, Nafti, Aquino and Nauzet. With midfielder Sisi already signed at Osasuna, the violeta will have lost 8 players off their squad. They will round out the list with youth-team players.

Zaragoza: With Antonio Prieto quitting, new President Fernando Molinos (who was hired from Espanyol by the way) and Manolo Jimenez have met to talk about the signing of Getafe winger Pedro Ríos and the renovations of keeper Leo Franco, left-back Javier Paredes and forward Carlos Aranda. Who knows who is really in charge at Zara.
